GRONINGEN AREAS

Where is the best area to stay in Groningen?

The right area depends on your priorities: walking everywhere, sleeping quietly, arriving by car or staying close to the station.

Short answer: the Indische Buurt is strong for quiet and easy access

If you want quiet nights, are arriving by car and still want quick access to central Groningen, we think the Indische Buurt is one of the most practical areas to stay. You are outside the busiest streets, while Studio Timor is about eight minutes by bicycle from Grote Markt and includes free private parking.

We live in the Indische Buurt ourselves and host Studio Timor here, so this is naturally the area we know best from daily experience. If walking everywhere is your priority, the city centre is more logical. Noorderplantsoen and Hortusbuurt are strong alternatives for greenery close to town, while Oosterpoort suits travellers who prefer the south-eastern side of the centre.

Indische Buurt: quiet, bike-friendly and practical by car

Best for: couples, German visitors driving to Groningen, parents visiting students and guests combining the city with day trips.

The Indische Buurt is north-east of the centre. You are outside the busiest streets, but the city remains close by bicycle. From Studio Timor, Grote Markt is about eight minutes by bike and Noorderplantsoen about five.

Studio Timor is located here: a fully private studio for two with its own entrance, bathroom, garden and free private parking. Its main advantage is returning to a quiet residential setting after spending the day in the city.

City centre: everything within walking distance

Best for: first-time visitors, nightlife, restaurants and travellers who want to do almost everything on foot.

The centre is the simplest choice if you want to stay right between Grote Markt, Vismarkt, Forum and the main shopping streets. The trade-off is more activity and expensive street parking. In 2026 the municipality charges €5.00 per hour for street parking in the city centre.

For a short car-free weekend this can be ideal. If you are sensitive to late-night noise or prefer more greenery, look just outside the core.

Noorderplantsoen and Hortusbuurt: green and close

Best for: couples who enjoy walking, coffee stops and a greener atmosphere while staying close to the action.

Noorderplantsoen borders the northern side of the centre. The surrounding streets have plenty of character and Grote Markt is easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. It feels less commercial than the very centre while remaining lively.

Parking in this area is still paid. The municipality lists a 2026 street-parking rate of €4.50 per hour in Hortusbuurt.

Oosterpoort: urban and convenient for the station side

Best for: travellers who like a lively residential neighbourhood and want to stay on the south-eastern side of the centre.

Oosterpoort sits immediately south-east of the city centre and has its own cafés, restaurants and cultural atmosphere. The centre is quickly reached on foot or by bicycle. Drivers should take paid parking in the area into account.

A one-minute decision guide

Choose the Indische Buurt if you value quiet nights, cycling and easy car access. Studio Timor is a concrete option here with free private parking and Grote Markt about eight minutes away by bicycle.
Choose the city centre if walking and nightlife matter more than quiet or parking.
Choose Noorderplantsoen/Hortusbuurt for greenery and character close to the centre.
Choose Oosterpoort if you like a lively residential area on the south-eastern side.

No district is objectively the best. We live in the Indische Buurt and host Studio Timor here, so this is the area we know best from daily experience. We also say clearly when another neighbourhood may suit your trip better.
