48 HOURS IN GRONINGEN

A weekend in Groningen: how we would spend 48 hours

Less box-ticking, more feeling the city: a practical mix of culture, parks, coffee, drinks and enough free time to wander.

Short answer: combine the historic centre with Noorderplantsoen

For a first weekend in Groningen, we would spend the first day around Grote Markt, Forum, Martinitoren, Vismarkt and Hoge der A. On the second day, slow down: breakfast or coffee, Noorderplantsoen, the Groninger Museum or a bicycle ride through the city. Groningen is compact enough to see a lot without a rigid schedule, which is exactly why a two-night stay works so well.

Friday evening: arrive without rushing

After checking in, we would not start with a long checklist. Cycle or walk towards the centre, take in Grote Markt and Forum and then choose somewhere for dinner or drinks.

Grote Markt is about eight minutes by bicycle from Studio Timor, so you can simply leave the car after arrival. Once in the centre, almost everything is easy to continue on foot.

If you still have energy after dinner, walk from Vismarkt towards Hoge der A. Around the end of the day, this is one of the most atmospheric parts of Groningen.

Saturday: Forum, Martinitoren and the city centre

Start with coffee and head towards Forum Groningen. The rooftop gives you an immediate sense of the city’s scale. From there, Grote Markt, Martinitoren, Prinsentuin and Vismarkt combine naturally into one route.

Do not schedule every hour. Groningen is best when you leave room for a terrace, a side street or a café that simply looks inviting. Our Explore Groningen page includes a map with favourite local addresses and practical distances from the studio.

Saturday evening: dinner and nightlife at your own pace

Poelestraat and Peperstraat are well known for late nights, but a weekend in Groningen does not have to become a pub crawl. For couples, we often prefer a relaxed dinner, one or two drinks and then deciding spontaneously whether to stay out later.

Because Studio Timor is just outside the centre, you return to a quiet residential neighbourhood after a busy evening. That contrast is useful if sleep matters to you.

Sunday: Noorderplantsoen, museum or cycling

On Sunday, slow the pace. Walk or cycle through Noorderplantsoen, get coffee and choose one main activity. The Groninger Museum makes sense in poor weather; on a dry day, a longer bicycle ride can be more enjoyable.

If you have a car and stay longer, Groningen also combines well with Lauwersmeer, Appingedam or the northern countryside. For a strict two-night weekend, we would not try to squeeze too much city and province into the same itinerary.

If it rains: Groningen still works well

Rain does not have to ruin the plan. Forum Groningen, the Groninger Museum, shops, cafés and restaurants are all relatively close together. You can switch between indoor and outdoor stops without long transfers.

Our advice is to keep one or two parts flexible and decide based on the weather that day. It makes the trip feel less like a schedule and more like a break.

Weekend FAQs

Practical choices for two nights in Groningen.

Yes. Two nights give you enough time for the main city-centre sights plus Noorderplantsoen, a museum or a relaxed bicycle ride.

Usually not for the city itself. Walking and cycling are often more practical. A car is mainly useful for travelling to Groningen and for day trips in the province.

Combine the historic centre with a good restaurant, Hoge der A, Noorderplantsoen and one cultural stop such as Forum or the Groninger Museum.

Look at residential areas just outside the centre. Studio Timor is in the quiet Indische Buurt, around eight minutes by bicycle from Grote Markt.
